Wildlife In Wurzburg

It’s been several years since I have seen wildlife roaming about in Germany, but this month the Falcons came back to their nest in our neighborhood,

Just this afternoon I saw a hedgehog, and several birds I have never seen before, a few rabbits have wandered into the area, and there is an epic ever on-going turf war between the Red Squirrels and Black Squirrels for dominance over the pine trees.

At the end of the day, as long as the falcons are around, they are basically given whatever they want, and the Amsel or Blackbirds squawk warnings to all the other wildlife the moment the falcons appear on the scene.

All of this is pretty, great. A few years back, when I first started living in Germany it was fairly common to see wild boar following their mother, and huge ferrets running around at night.

I’m glad to see that the critters are starting to show themselves again.

The Falcons, in particular, have taken to looking right at me, there are, as far as I can tell five in total.

It’s pretty cool because my back yard is essentially a nature show every morning and evening.

The Falcons, though, they are Boss. No questions asked. Just a week ago they actually flew up to me while I was standing on my balcony, we were about a foot apart from each other, when we kind of accidentally freaked each other out at the same time.

I had no interest in getting done in by two Hawks or Falcons, and they had no interest and seeing what I would do if they landed on the railing of my balcony, so they landed in the yard in front of me and we had a staredown for about ten minutes.

Ever since then, they’ve been bringing their kills to the area in front of my balcony and eyeballing me as they eat.

I am not exactly intimidated but I am certainly impressed. Especially with how intelligent they are, and the fact that they are trying to punk me out

I get to watch the Tex Avery cartoons in real life from my back yard.
